Traveling acoustic is no problem.  You pick up your guitar and play.  Traveling electric poses a challenge: How do you hear what you're playing without lugging an amp?  If you don't want to wear headphones, a great option is the Smokey Amplifier.

The Smokey Amplifier is a pocketable amp with an almost 2-inch speaker.  Despite its small size, it delivers powerful volume, gain and distortion -- depending on how you set the controls on your guitar.

With a Smokey Amplifier, you will be able to play loudly enough to fill a hotel room.  But, it can also be used quietly, so your playing doesn't disturb anyone on the other side of the wall.  This flexibility also makes the Smokey Amplifier a great practice amp.

The Smokey Amplifier features a 1/4 inch input for use as a speaker.  It also has a 1/4 inch output to send the signal to a 6, 8 or 16 ohm speaker cabinet.  Some players even use it as a fuzz box.

The Smokey Amplifier runs a long time on a single 9 volt battery.  The only shortcoming I could find is that the speaker is recessed in the hard plastic casing but not covered.  You have to be careful not to let anything impact the speaker face.

A 1/4" input is used when operating the Smokey Amplifier on its own.  The 1/4" output is used to patch the unit into an external speaker.  The unit can also be used as a fuzz box.
