Finding a personal flotation device (PFD) that fits well for paddling sports can be a challenge. Most PFDs I've tried are boxy, have thick pads that get in the way of arm movement, and ride up when you're in a seated position. The PFD I wore before I bought an Extrasport Chica PFD had all those problems and more. It had straps that were hard to adjust and pockets with zippers that jammed. It's a real bummer when a piece of gear gets in the way of having a good time.

The first time I tried on a friend's Extrasport Chica PFD I was sold. The vest-style PFD was obviously designed by a team that actually enjoyed watersports. The vest has a meaty zipper and clasp that make it easy to get on and off. There are six straps that can be pulled to make it fit just right. And fit just right it does.

The Extrasport Chica PFD's flotation panels are cut for a perfect fit. The panels in the front start thicker at the bottom and taper toward the top, giving your upper body more mobility. The back panels are just as ingenious. The designers put a thin panel on the bottom, where your back meets the seat, and a thicker panel on top, where your back is free of the seatback. This means it's easier to adjust your PFD and seatback for a comfortable ride.

All that and there's a roomy mesh pocket for safety equipment and other gear, and a square that other equipment can be attached to on the front right panel. The bright red or yellow colors will make a boater easier to find in the water. The only caution for a Type III PFD is that its intended for near shore, calm water use, where the wearer can expect quick aid if they fall unconscious. Extrasport says the Chica model was "orignially the ultimate fit for women, it has become a favorite of men and women alike." I can see why.

The Extrasport Chica Personal Flotation Device is popular among men and women because, unlike most PFDs, it's comfortable and non-intrusive when canoeing and kayaking. Fitting it right is as simple as zipping up, clasping, and pulling on six straps.

The back panels on the Extrasport Chica are especially ingenious. The lower panel, where your back meets the kayak seat, is extra thin so you can lean back. The upper panel is thicker. Another huge plus of this model is that the yellow or red colors improve visibility on the water.
